Cigarette

Welcome to BBC Xtra English.

Anna and Somaya talk about trying to encourage young people not to smoke.

A company in Japan has developed a vending machine which tries to guess a person's age.

It uses face recognition technology to measure facial characteristics like wrinkles and bone structure - to work out people's ages.

In Japan the legal age for smoking is 20. So if a person looks under the age of 20 it won't allow them to buy cigarettes.

Young people who fail the age test need to show the machine ID to prove their age. This could be a driving licence or ID card.

The company which makes the vending machine says it is correct in 9 out of 10 cases.

Companies who sell cigarettes to under-age people could be prosecuted.

How can children and young people be persuaded not to smoke? Should parents set a good example and not smoke in front of children. Is advertising to blame? Will getting children interested in sport stop them wanting to smoke?

ما هى أفضل الوسائل لحث الشباب على عدم التدخين ؟
