Welcome to BBC Xtra English. Today, Kaz and Roula answer questions from Yemen and Sudan.
Ali Al Musri from Yemen asks about the rules for
conditionalsentences with 'if'.
Kaz says that many grammar books say that there are four types of conditionals. Two deal with real situations and two with unreal or imaginary situations. Conditional sentences with if have two parts or clauses - the part with if and a second part.
Today we'll look at one of the conditionals that deals with real situations - the First Conditional. You make the First Conditional by using the present simple tense with if and will or won't in the second part of the sentence. It is not usual to use will or won't in the if part of the sentence.
Here are some examples:
If you hurry, you'll catch the six o'clock train.
If you carry on eating sweets, you'll ruin your teeth.
If I see something nice, I'll get it for you.
If we leave before the film ends, we'll never know who did it!
In the if part of the sentence we talk about things that are possible but not totally certain.
In the other half of the sentence we say what we think the result will be of that thing.
Notice that in writing we use a comma to separate the two halves of the sentence.
Many sentences like this are reversible. For example:
You'll ruin your teeth if you carry on eating sweets.
Notice that when we put the if part second we leave out the comma.
We'll have more conditional sentences in future programmes.
Roula and Kaz also answered a question fgrom Sudan from Bannaga Badawi about the word momentum.
Kaz says that this word has the idea of something increasing, developing or getting stronger so we often find it associated with the verbs to gain or gather: For example 'political change was gathering momentum'.
To say the opposite use lose. For example: 'The campaign gradually lost momentum'.
In technical English momentum is the force or power contained in a moving object, to calculate momentum multiply weight by speed.
